heritage trail - i carbonari in valle di mezzana
U chjassu di i carbunari di Petru Ghjuvanni Poggiale allows visitors to follow in the footsteps of young Pierre-Jean and discover the world of the vanished coalminers.
This character was created as a tribute to Pierre-Jean Poggiale, Mayor of Valle-di-Mezzana and Vice-President of the CAPA who died in 2021, and who initiated the creation of this trail.
Following in their footsteps, the young boy recounts the story of his great-grandfather, accompanied by his brother and uncle, who arrived from the Bergamo region of Italy in the 1930s, fleeing poverty and fascism to work as coal miners.
Coming for a season, they chose to live here with their families.
Discover the Valle di Mezzana trail!
A place of history and exceptional natural heritage, the trail can be enjoyed by the whole family for a 2.5 hr, 6 km hike.
The trail takes you on a journey through the history of the commune, and introduces you to I carbunari di Tinturaghju, the charcoal kilns that once stood near the stream.
Departure point:
From the heart of the village, it follows the old communal path that used to lead to the gardens. The gardens have now disappeared under the vegetation, but the drystone walls and terraces are still visible.
Towards the stream, the Charbonnières path runs alongside the Tinturaghju stream, then slopes steadily upwards into the communal holm oak forest. It passes at the foot of some magnificent cliffs, then follows the forest track for around 100 m before rejoining the banks of the Tinturaghju.
A variant via the ridge has also been integrated into the route for a more sporting public. This route, after a rapid ascent through the forest, offers a different atmosphere, through the scrubland and unobstructed views over the Gulf of Ajaccio, the Gravona valley and the village of Valle di Mezzana. This loop also links up with the trail leading to Monte Gozzi.
