The legend of St Erasmus

As a bolt of lightning struck the ground near him, Erasmus continued to preach. This is why he became the patron saint of sailors.
Fearing the danger of storms at sea, sailors decided to pray to him whenever the weather was bad. Electrical discharges at the mastheads of ships were seen as a sign of his protection, and came to be known as "Saint Elmo's fires".

Saint Elme is also the name of Saint Erasmus.
