municipal library
CLOSURE FOR WORKS
The municipal library was created in 1801 by Lucien Bonaparte, Napoleon's brother.
Its entrance is remarkable for the grand staircase and the two lions, which were moulded by Canova on the originals that adorn the tomb of Pope Clement XIII in Saint Peter's in Rome.
The reading room, which is 30 metres long, houses part of the ancient collection. It now contains 40,000 works from the 15th to the 19th century, including 29 incunabula and 220 manuscripts.
These marvels are to be found in Ajaccio thanks in particular to donations from Cardinal Fesch, Roland Bonaparte, grandson of Lucien, and Louis Campi.
The library also owns:
- Blaeu's Encyclopédie géographique (17th century) 23 volumes.
- Diderot and d'Alembert's Encyclopédie (18th century) 27 volumes.
- Buffon's Histoire Naturelle (18th century) 37 volumes;
